Chapter 9

L

auren, as she did while they were at Zion National Park, woke up early to go get breakfast for her and Kaylee. She was used to getting up early in the morning for work. Normally getting up with the sunrise, sometimes earlier, to sit on her couch and have a proper breakfast and a cup of coffee or tea. This morning was no different since her body seemed to have created an internal alarm clock many years ago.

When Lauren woke up, Kaylee had an arm wrapped around her middle. Kaylee’s head was tucked into Lauren’s upper arm, which looked awkward, but she was sleeping comfortably. Lauren had pulled Kaylee’s arm from around her waist and placed it down onto a pillow. Kaylee immediately grabbed the pillow and pulled it into her, probably thinking it was Lauren.

Shortly after, Lauren was in the truck, having locked the Yurt door behind her. She drove out of the State Park and into the closest town to get a takeaway breakfast. They were tempted to stop for some groceries on their way into Colorado but being unsure of what they would need or use, they decided against it.

Lauren walked into a small diner and placed an order with the worker at the front. Things with the pandemic hadn’t picked up yet in the middle of the country, the way they did in the bigger cities on the coast, so a lot was still open. Lauren had been reading about all the closures throughout the country and didn’t know what to expect with each new stop she and Kaylee made. There wasn’t much planning that they could do when it came to the pandemic because no one had any idea what was going to happen next. So, Kaylee and Lauren agreed the previous day on their drive, that they would just figure it out as they went. They would continue to check the news and continue to look into whatever viable options they had. As they were getting closer to the eastern side of the US, they were going to encounter more and more problems, but that was to be figured out when they got close. They could plan for it now, but it could easily change again within hours.

Lauren waited at a table in the diner for her food. She scrolled through her work email, checking for any new update. There were none, which was unsettling for Lauren since she liked to keep her work schedule organized. She moved on to Instagram after her emails, scrolling through her feed, looking for some kind of entertainment.

Lauren stopped when she saw the photo of her and Kaylee in front of the Utah sign. Kaylee must have posted it sometime yesterday while Lauren was driving them to Golden Gate Canyon, but Lauren was only seeing it now. The picture was cute, just the two of them smiling wide in front of the sign and an amazing view. Kaylee had written “Thank you for being you” as the caption underneath and Lauren knew exactly what she meant.
